Zimbabwe is a landlocked country located in Southern Africa with Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia as its neighbours. It occupies 390,580 sq km with 386,670 sq km of land and 3,910 sq km of water. Its land use includes arable land of 8.32% with 0.34% of permanent crops and other uses taking up 91.34%. Irrigated land is 1,170 sq km. Zimbabwe’s population is 12,746,990 with an adult HIV/AIDS prevalence rate of 24.6% and 70% of the population living below the poverty line. Literacy rate of the population of 15 years and over is 90.7% out of which 94.2% are male and 87.2% are female.


The agricultural sector contributes 18.1% and 66% of the labour force is engaged in agricultural activities. The agricultural products include corn, cotton, tobacco, wheat, coffee, sugarcane, peanuts, sheep, goats and pigs. Zimbabwe is endowed with natural resources such as coal, chromium ore, asbestos, gold, nickel, copper, iron ore, vanadium, lithium, tin and platinum group metals. Natural hazards include recurring droughts, floods and severe storms are rare. Environmental concerns include deforestation, soil erosion, land degradation, air and water pollution, the black rhinoceros herd (once the largest concentration of the species in the world ) has been significantly reduced by poaching, poor mining practices have led to toxic waste and heavy metal pollution. Zimbabwe is party to international environmental agreements such as Biodiversity, Climate Change, Desertification, Endangered Species, Law of the Sea and Ozone Layer Protection.


PELUM Zimbabwe has 29 members (19 full members and 10 associates). Plans are underway to fundraise for a truck for seed saver network and to hold a meeting of about 60,000 participants. A draft syllabus was developed for organic certification.
