Sustainable agriculture

PELUM works with farmers in the region and enhances their capacities to make choices that are ecologically and economically sustainable. It encourages agricultural practices that are not harmful to the environment and which use natural farming methods farming methods. Since its inception, PELUM has been promoting the use of sustainable methods of farming and the preservation of the natural resource. PELUM's work is grounded in its recognition of the weakly tapped potential of indigenous knowledge and indigenous farming and cropping patterns. Hence since 2005, promoting traditional food crops, and raising their nutrition and economic significance, has been and continues to be a major thrust of PELUM work. PELUM has continued advocate against genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Market and Fair Trade issues

PELUM undertakes to advocate for fair trade to enable smallholder farmers to effectively participate in the market. It does this through capacity building in farming business skills, post-harvesting techniques and campaign and lobbying for fair trade and improved rural infrastructure.

Access to resources
PELUM believes that with the use of locally available resources, farmers can reduce the costs related to purchase of external inputs. It also promotes food/seed security and general rural development as well as climate change adaptation.
