HIV/AIDS GENDER AND
DEVELOPMENT
The programme is aimed at ensuring the
mainstreaming of gender and HIV/AIDS awareness and action in all the
activities of PELUM. The objective is to achieve gender equality and equity
policy transformation at all levels of the Association. PELUM is committed
to seeing both men and women contribute and also benefit meaningfully from a
process of development that is sustainable. PELUM developed and adopted a
gender policy, which provides guidance for gender mainstreaming in all
activities of member organisations.
A key strategy in this regard is
capacity building for gender mainstreaming through training and sensitisation and translating the policy to activities on the ground. At
present, one of the programme officers at the Regional Desk is at present
the focal person for gender and HIV/AIDS activities and programmes in the
network. PELUM has run five gender and development workshops since 1998 and
in the process trained eighty development workers, mostly from member organisations. This has prompted some member organisations and Country
Working Groups to develop and implement gender policies and programmes.
