About PELUM Association...
PELUM Association
is a regional network of over 160 civil society organisations in east,
central and southern Africa, working towards sustainable agriculture, food
security, and sustainable community development in the region. The
Association, launched in 1995, is currently working in 10 countries in the
region, namely, Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa,
Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The network has 7 standing desks in Kenya, Lesotho,
Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and
Zimbabwe. There are some members in Mozambique and
Namibia who are however yet to form established Country Working Groups (CWGs)
of PELUM.
PELUM Association�s
long-term objectives are to build the capacity of farming and
rural community groups in order to enable them accumulate ecological skills,
stimulate farmer learning and inspire experimentation and innovation in
their quest to achieve food security. In order to attain these objectives,
PELUM Association facilitates learning and networking, participatory
research, capacity building and lobbying and advocacy for small-scale farmer
groups and civil society organisations.
PELUM works to enhance the capacities of
member organisations to effectively influence the development discourse.
PELUM therefore works to see sustainable local community livelihoods and
empowered small scale farmers. PELUM also supports the small scale farmers,
through the East and Southern Africa Small Scale Farmers Forum (ESAFF), to
sustainably manage their natural resources and enhance their capacity to
speak for themselves in challenging systems and structures that have a
bearing on their wellbeing. PELUM promotes participatory approaches to
development.
The key strategies of PELUM are capacity
building, networking and advocacy. It also supports small farmer
organisations and groups to speak for themselves.

PELUM works in the areas of sustainable
agriculture and rural development. Its strategies are training, research,
documentation, information sifting and dissemination of good practice,
networking and advocacy. PELUM brings together approaches, people and
institutions for greater capacity and impact.
