PELUM Association is a regional network of over 160 civil society organisations in east, central and southern Africa, working towards sustainable agriculture, food security, and sustainable community development in the region. The Association, launched in 1995, is currently working in 10 countries in the region, namely, Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The network has 7 standing desks in Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.  There are some members in Mozambique and Namibia who are however yet to form established Country Working Groups (CWGs) of PELUM.

PELUM Associations long-term objectives are to build the capacity of farming and rural community groups in order to enable them accumulate ecological skills, stimulate farmer learning and inspire experimentation and innovation in their quest to achieve food security. In order to attain these objectives, PELUM Association facilitates learning and networking, participatory research, capacity building and lobbying and advocacy for small-scale farmer groups and civil society organisations.

PELUM works to enhance the capacities of member organisations to effectively influence the development discourse. PELUM therefore works to see sustainable local community livelihoods and empowered small scale farmers. PELUM also supports the small scale farmers, through the East and Southern Africa Small Scale Farmers Forum (ESAFF), to sustainably manage their natural resources and enhance their capacity to speak for themselves in challenging systems and structures that have a bearing on their wellbeing. PELUM promotes participatory approaches to development.

The key strategies of PELUM are capacity building, networking and advocacy. It also supports small farmer organisations and groups to speak for themselves.
