PELUM Association is a regional network of over 200 civil society organisations in east, central and southern Africa, which is working towards sustainable agriculture, food security, and sustainable community development in the region. The Association, launched in 1995, is currently working in ten countries: Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Association’s long-term objectives are to build capacity of farming and rural community groups to accumulate ecological capital and stimulate farmer learning and inspire them to experiment and innovate in empowering ways for food security as well as sustainability. To attain these objectives, PELUM Association is facilitating learning and networking, participatory research, capacity building and lobbying and advocacy with small-scale farmers groups and civil society organisations.

The key strategies of PELUM are capacity building, information sifting and dissemination, networking, advocacy and lobbying. It also supports small farmer organisations and groups to speak for themselves.

PELUM’s vision is, “to see communities in east, central and southern Africa become self-organized to make choices towards an improved quality of life that is socially, economically and ecologically sustainable.”
